Approaching the flooring estimating process can be overwhelming. It's important to take your time and do your research in order to get the best deal for your project. Here are some tips (some from personal experience, and some from our past clients) on how to handle this process like a pro:
1. Check the License
Ensure that the flooring business has an active and non-suspended C-15 Flooring license. Licenses are issued by the CA Contractor's State License Board and provide assurance that the contractors in charge of installation have been properly trained and certified to perform flooring work in your area. Valid worker's compensation and liability insurance are also important to ensure that any accidents or damages that occur on the job site will be covered. Believe it or not, the California State License Board cracks down on thousands of unlicensed contractors every year. Don't be a victim of unlicensed activity!
Pro Tip: Ask your estimator for a C-15 Floor Covering License number and search it on the Contractor’s State License Board website to make sure their credentials are valid.
2. Get Multiple Quotes
Don't just settle for one quote - shop around and compare multiple quotes (3-5 is a good start) ! This will help you find the most competitive rate and also ensure that you're getting an honest estimate. When it comes to comparing quotes from different contractors, make sure to take an “apples-to-apples” approach. This means ensuring that each quote is for the same type and quality of work and materials, so that comparisons are fair and accurate. Make sure to read every detail carefully before making a decision, especially the terms and conditions of your agreement. Ask questions if necessary, such as what warranties are included and how issues/claims are processed. By taking a detailed look at all the information provided on each offer, you’ll be able to determine which contractor offers the best value for your money while also protecting your investment.

3. Check Company Reviews
When evaluating competing quotes, take the time to research and evaluate reviews before committing. Start by asking friends and family for recommendations. Word of mouth is one of the best methods for selecting reputable contractors, so take advantage of any advice from people you trust. Next, search online for customer reviews and ratings. Websites like Yelp or Google Businesses are great resources for finding unbiased opinions about contractors. When going through reviews, pay close attention to details such as timeliness of completion, quality of workmanship, communication between contractor and homeowner, cost estimates vs actual expenses incurred, etc., as these can help give you an idea of what to expect when working with a particular contractor.
Pro Tip: Ask for a list of references. A reputable contractor should be able to provide you with a list of former customers who will be willing to speak about their experience. Superior businesses may even set up an appointment with a past client or ongoing project for you to personally witness their work.
4. The Intangibles (Human Connection):
When evaluating a contractor, it is important to look out for signals that will help you gauge their character and level of commitment to the job. If a contractor appears disorganized or does not respond promptly to questions and queries, this could be an indication that they are inefficient and may not provide satisfactory results on the job. Additionally, ensure that you have spent enough time getting to know them so that you can determine how well they communicate with you and whether there is a good chemistry between the two of you. Additionally, evaluate their estimating process because that is likely how your project will go; ask yourself if they provide you with timely responses when needed and note how they prefer to communicate (email, text, phone, smoke signals). Lastly, observe what kind of team they have for the project – is it a one-man show or are there other people co-supervising your installation throughout the duration of the project. If we had to vote on "the most important factor" in the estimating process, the personal and human connection with your contractor would be the one!
Pro Tip: Word of mouth referrals are really the best way to find honest, trustworthy contractors. If you're new to the area, ask around your local community through Facebook community groups that may have insights into the contractor you're looking at.
